Libano: Hariri ucciso da servizi segreti, dice ex capo 007

BEIRUT - "I servizi segreti libanesi e siriani hanno assassinato l'ex premier Rafik Hariri". L'accusa è stata lanciata dall'ex capo dell'intelligence militare libanese, colonnello Johnny Abdo, citato oggi dalla stampa di Beirut.

In un'intervista televisiva, Abdo - che è stato anche ambasciatore libanese a Parigi - ha affermato ieri sera che una serie di fatti "hanno rivelato senza alcun dubbio l'identità dei responsabili" dell'esplosione di San Valentino a Beirut. Abdo ha sottolineato che l'immediata rimozione di veicoli dal luogo dell'attentato e i tentativi di ricoprire il cratere provocato dall'esplosione dimostrerebbero che "qualcuno ha cercato di coprire il crimine".

Abdo ha poi affermato che il comandante della Guardia presidenziale, generale Mustafa Hamdan, "era responsabile della protezione del teatro del crimine, cosa che non era di sua competenza". E ha aggiunto che Hamdan faceva parte di un apparato incaricato di sorvegliare Hariri, e la cui esistenza sarebbe stata nota anche al presidente siriano Bashar al-Assad. Al controllo del Libano da 29 anni e accusata per l'uccisione di Hariri, la Siria ha negato ogni coinvolgimento, ma le pressioni internazionali hanno imposto a Damasco il ritiro delle sue truppe dal vicino Paese, che si è concluso martedì.

Abdo ha quindi sostenuto che Hariri, il quale aveva rotto con la Siria in settembre e si era dimesso da premier il mese successivo, stava preparandosi a partecipare alle elezioni e a vincerle assieme all'opposizione, per poi dar vita a un governo. L'ex ambasciatore libanese a Parigi ha dichiarato di aver allora con altri messo in guardia Hariri per le minacce alla sua vita, ma che "le rassicurazioni americane e francesi lo avevano indotto a non prestarci ascolto".

Among the flaws identified were the disappearance of crucial evidence and tampering with the scene of the blast. Parts of a pick-up truck were brought to the scene, placed in the crater and photographed as evidence, it said. The report alleged investigative judges had no control over the probe and even faulted police for not turning off a water main that flooded the blast crater and washed away vital evidence.

'Hariri assassins not Australian suspects'

The official theory remains centred on the blast being the work of a suicide bomber, despite a number of credible sources insisting that the blast was caused by a bomb placed below the surface of the road where Hariri's convoy was passing. The huge crater in the road left behind by the bombing tends to add weight to this theory according to independent security experts.

According to former senior adviser of the United Nations Interim Forces In Lebanon (Unifil), Timur Goksel, the assassination could not have been a car bomb.

Goksel, who spent much of his term in South Lebanon dealing with explosions said: "If it were a car bomb, the damage would have been lateral and not vertical and the Saint Georges Hotel would have been swept away."

Goksel believes the explosion "almost certainly" came from the ground upward.

The opposition Free Patriotic Movement Web site shows a series of photographs and diagrams from the site of the blast which it insists prove the blast came from beneath the ground.

The Web site said the presence of large chunks of asphalt near the crater and an exposed manhole, both clearly visible in most pictures after the bombing, indicates the bomb had to have been planted below ground. The Web site adds: "If the explosion was above the ground, the (manhole) cover wouldn't fly off."

Chief military Magistrate Rashid Mezher has demanded police investigate recent road works in in the area and provide him with information on who commissioned the work as well as the identities of the laborers who carried out the work.

With the clock running, UN team looks to crack Hariri case

After the blast, which experts say involved some 350 kilograms of explosives, some figures advanced allegations that the bomb had been buried in an underground tunnel. They based their theory on the massive crater left by the explosion and pieces of asphalt found hundreds of meters away from the explosion site. Beirut MP Mohammad Qabbani insisted "the tunnel is real."
