Times of India
All explosions were reported to have taken place in first class compartments of trains at a time when a large chunk of the commercial capital is returning home from office.

Ny Times
Most of them were men, he said, with their pants ripped off, suggesting that a bomb may have been placed on the floor of their train compartment.

Guardian
A resident of Birmingham, UK, named as Harpreet, wrote that a friend resident in Mumbai had been traumatised by the blasts: "He was on the same train when the first class compartment exploded. He saw an orange flame and then smoke. People were jumping out of the running train. When he got off, he saw bodies on the tracks."
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks, but the blasts came in quick succession - a common tactic employed by Kashmiri militants that have repeatedly targeted India's cities.
Herald Tribune
No organization came forward to claim responsibility in the hours following the blasts.
The Indian media, however, was quick to highlight the possible involvement of Kashmiri militant groups fighting for the separation of their Muslim-majority state from India

The force of the explosion tore off the train's windows and doors, and body parts could be seen among the mechanical wreckage on the railway sidings.

On some trains, the alarm was so intense that passengers were reported to have thrown themselves from moving cars after hearing the blasts. Most of the bombs were understood to have gone off in first-class cars.

Rediff.com's Syed Firdaus Ashraf, who was at Mahim railway station soon after reports of the blast came in, said he could see one train compartment was completely blown up in the explosion, and people were carrying bodies away. Commuters said an explosion went off in the men's first class compartment on a Western Railway local, which left Churgate station in South Mumbai at 1754, as it was leaving Mahim station on track 3 at around 1820 hours.

Washington Post
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the Bombay bombings, which occurred in quick succession in the port city's western suburbs. But suspicion quickly focused on Muslim militants fighting New Delhi's rule of Kashmir, who have been blamed for several bomb attacks in India in the past.

Bloomberg
The Mumbai explosions followed grenade attacks earlier today by suspected Islamic terrorists that killed eight people in Srinagar, the summer capital of India's northern state of Jammu and Kashmir.
...
Television pictures showed people streaming with blood from the injuries being carried from railway coaches that had been ripped apart by the impact of the blasts. In at least one such instance, the metal roof of the railway platform was pulled off its moorings by the force of the blast.
